Auberge of England

Location: Il-Birgu

The Auberge d'Angleterre was built in around 1534 to house the knights of the Order of St John from the langue of England. The Auberge incorporates an earlier building owned by a Maltese woman named Catherine Abela. In December of 1534, the building was sold to the English knight Sir Clement West who donated it to the langue of England and was turned into the langue’s headquarters. The Auberge is built in the Melitan Style, based on traditional Maltese architecture and it has a similar layout as Auberge de France. It features two floors with rooms built around a central courtyard. The piano nobile is located on the first floor. The façade is plain, and its doorway is topped by a circular window surrounded by windows on each side. All the doors and windows are decorated by Melitan Mouldings. The rear of the Auberge d'Angleterre was connected to Auberge d’Allemagne. The Auberge d'Angleterre is still intact and it is considered as the best-preserved Hospitaller auberge in Birgu. The building was included on the Antiquities List of 1925 and it was scheduled as a Grade 1 national monument on 22 December 2009. It is also listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands. The auberge now serves as the Vittoriosa Health Centre. In collaboration with Kottonera Foundation.

Il-Berġa tal-Ingilterra nbniet madwar l-1534 biex tilqa’ l-kavallieri tal-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann mil-lingwa tal-Ingilterra. F’Diċembru tal-1534, il-binja nbiegħet lill-kavallier Ingliż Sir Clement West li taha donazzjoni lill-kavallieri Ingliżi li bidlu l-binja fil-kwartieri ġenerali tal-lingwa Ingliża. Il-Berġa hija mibnija fl-Istil Melitan, ibbażata fuq arkitettura tradizzjonali Maltija u qegħda mqassma simili għall-Berġa ta’ Franza. Għandha żewġ sulari bi kmamar mibnija madwar bitħa ċentrali. Il-piano nobile jinsab fl-ewwel sular. Il-faċċata hija sempliċi u fuq il-bieb prinċipali hemm tieqa ċirkolari filwaqt li huwa mdawwar bit-twieqi fuq kull naħa. Il-bibien u t-twieqi kollha huma mżejna bi gwarniċi Melitan. Il-parti ta’ wara tal-Berġa tal-Ingilterra kienet tmiss mal-Berġa tal-Ġermanja. Il-Berġa tal-Ingilterra għadha intatta u hija meqjusa bħala l-berġa li hi ppreservata l-aħjar ġewwa l-Birgu. Il-bini kien inkluż fuq il-Lista tal-Antikitajiet tal-1925 u kien skedat bħala monument nazzjonali ta’ Grad 1 fit-22 ta’ Diċembru 2009.
