Maritime Museum

Location: Malta Maritime Museum, Ex-Naval Bakery Vittoriosa Waterfront, Birgu BRG 1721

In 1988, the idea to have a Maltese Maritime Museum was proposed. It took 4 years for the necessary artifacts to be collected and on 24 July 1992 the museum opened its doors to the public. The building that was found to be the most suitable location to host large museum exponents was the old Royal Naval Bakery which was constructed by the British between 1842 and 1845. The Museum charts 7000 years of Malta’s Maritime history, from prehistory to the present day. It contains several exponents which belong to different epochs and illustrate the global nature of seafaring and its impact on Maltese society. The museum manifests the fascination of the sea within a Mediterranean context, without neglecting the overall global nature of seafaring. Today the museum has a unique collection of over 20,000 artefacts which include the largest known roman anchor in the world, the earliest known ex-voto on the island, the largest ship model belonging to the Order of St John, the largest collection of cannons on the island, the figurehead of the Napoleonic-era 110-gun ship HMS Hibernia, a 1950s working marine steam engine, and a collection of more than 60 boats. In collaboration with Kottonera Foundation.

Fl-1988, ġiet proposta l-idea li jkun hawn Mużew Marittimu Malti. Ittieħdu 4 snin biex jinġabru l-artifatti meħtieġa imbagħad fl-24 ta' Lulju 1992 il-mużew fetaħ il-bibien tiegħu għall-pubbliku. L-iktar post li nstab adattat biex jospita esponenti kbar tal-mużew kien il-bini li qabel kien jintuża bħala l-Forn Navali Ingliż li nbena mill-Ingliżi bejn l-1842 u l-1845. Fih jinstabu diversi esponenti li jappartjenu għal epoki differenti u juru n-natura globali tal-baħar u l-impatt tiegħu fuq is-soċjetà Maltija. Il-mużew juri l-faxxinu tal-baħar f'kuntest Mediterranju, mingħajr ma jittraskura n-natura globali tal-baħar. Illum il-mużew għandu kollezzjoni unika tal-fuq minn 20,000 artefatt li jinkludu l-ikbar ankra Rumana magħrufa fid-dinja, l-ewwel eks-voto magħruf fil-gżira, l-akbar mudell ta' vapur li kien jappartjeni lill-Ordni ta' San Ġwann, l-akbar kollezzjoni ta' kanuni fuq il-gżira, il-vapur Napoleoniku HMS Hibernia, magna tal-istim tal-baħar li kienet tintuża fil-ħamsinijiet u kollezzjoni ta’ aktar minn 60 dgħajsa. B’kollaborazzjoni mal-Fondazzjoni Kottonera.
