Siculo - Norman Building

Location: Triq Tramuntana, Birgu

This Siculo - Norman Building is one of the oldest buildings in Birgu believed to date back to the 13th century. It is built in what is known as the Siculo-Norman style. The term Siculo-Norman refers to the architectural style
that evolved during the Norman occupation of Sicily and which was exported to Malta when Malta was under the rule of Sicily and the Normans. High on its front there is a very fine double-light window with the string course supported by beautiful Gothic arcading and Norman style friezing across the façade. The interior of the house includes several pointed archways which makes it also very interesting. Today the Siculo - Norman Building is privately owned and serves as a museum which is open for the public. It took five years to be restored to its present condition.

Id-Dar Normanna hija waħda mill-eqdem binjiet fil-Birgu u hija maħsuba li tmur lura għas-seklu 13. Hija mibnija fuq stil Sikulo-Norman. It-terminu Sikulo-Norman jirreferi għall-istil arkitettoniku li evolva matul l-okkupazzjoni Normanna fi Sqallija li mbagħad ġie esportat lejn Malta meta Malta kienet taħt Sqallija u taħt in-Normanni. Fuq il-faċċata tad-dar hemm tieqa mżejna b’arkati Gotiċi u b’faċċata ddisinjata fuq stil Norman. Din it-tieqa hija waħda mil-iktar twieqi imżejna b’mod rikk f’Malta. Jidher li hija unika fil-gżira. Interessanti l-fatt li fid-dar wieħed isib diversi arkati bil-ponta. Illum il-ġurnata id-dar Normanna hija binja privata u sservi bħala mużew li huwa miftuħ għal pubbliku. Fis-snin li għaddew id-Dar Normanna ġiet irrestawratha, restawr li ħa madwar ħames snin biex jitlesta.
