The War Victims Monument

Location: Triq Il- Pellegrinaag, Bormla

The war victims monument, located in front of the Cospicua Parish church was created by Michael Camilleri Cauchi in 1994 as part of the 50th anniversary from the pilgrimage held at the end of the Second World War, when the statue of the Immaculate Conception was returned to Cospicua. The monument was inaugurated on 20th November 1994 by his excellency Dr. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, President of Malta and blessed by the Cospicua Parish priest Can. Victor Cilia. The monument represents triumph over the war and even though Cospicua was severely damaged, the parish church remained intact. Since Cospicua was one of the enemies most targeted places the statue of the Immaculate Conception was taken to a safe place. The pilgrimage was held as a thanksgiving to the Immaculate Conception since the Parish church was not damaged and since the war was finally over the statue could be brought back to Cospicua. The monument also commemorates all the Cospicuans who lost their lives during the war. The figure in the middle of the monument remembers the triumph of good over bad and the triumph of peace over war with the intercession of God. The figure on the right represents the Cospicuan victims of the war whilst the figure of a woman on the left symbolizes the pilgrimage of 19th November 1944 and the angel besides her represents peace. Il-monument tal-vittmi tal-gwerra, li jinsab quddiem il-knisja Parrokkjali ta’ Bormla kien magħmul minn Michael Camilleri Cauchi fl-1994 bħala parti mill-50 anniversarju mill-pellegrinaġġ li sar fi tmiem it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, meta l-istatwa tal-Kunċizzjoni ġiet lura Bormla. Il-monument ġie inawgurat fl-20 ta’ Novembru 1994 mill-eċċellenza tiegħu il-President ta’ Malta Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici u mbierek mill-Arċipriet ta’ Bormla il-Kan. Victor Cilia. Il-monument jirrappreżenta trijonf fuq il-gwerra peress li anke jekk Bormla ġarrbet ħsarat estensivi il-knisja parrokkjali ma ntlaqtitx mil-bombi. Peress li Bormla kienet waħda mill-aktar postijiet immirati mill-għadu l-istatwa tal-Kunċizzjoni ttieħdet f'post sigur. Il-pellegrinaġġ sar bħala ringrazzjament lill-Immakulata Kunċizzjoni talli l-knisja Parrokkjali ma ġietx milquta u peress lil-gwerra kienet spiċċat, l-istatwa setgħet tinġieb lura Bormla. Il-monument ifakkar ukoll lill-Bormliżi kollha li tilfu ħajjithom matul il-gwerra. Il-figura f’nofs il-monument tfakkar fit-trijonf tat-tajjeb fuq il-ħażin, it-trijonf tal-paċi fuq il-gwerra bl-interċessjoni ta’ Alla. Il-figura fuq il-lemin tirrappreżenta l-vittmi Bormliżi tal-gwerra filwaqt lil-figura ta’ mara fuq ix-xellug tissimbolizza l-pellegrinaġġ tad-19 ta’ Novembru 1944 u l-anġlu ta’ ħdejha jirrappreżenta l-paċi.
