Dock Clock
Location: Fort St Michael, Isla.
The construction of Fort St Michael in Senglea began on 8th May 1552 during the era of Grand Master Juan d’Homedes. It was designed by architect Pedro Pardo d’Andrera and was completed in 1553. The construction of the walled city of Senglea started during the following decade. The city of Senglea was built on a grid plan and the same concept was also used in the building of the new capital city of Valletta. Unfortunately, this part of Senglea was demolished at the end of the 19th century by the British authorities in order to extend the dockyard area. The Senglea clock tower was built by the British in 1908. The clock tower has four faces and looks on the three cities. Its machinery was manufactured in 1905 by John Smith & Sons, Midland Clock Works, Derby. During the Second World War the area was heavily bombarded but luckily the clock was never hit and never stopped working. Later on, the clock tower was handed over to the Malta Drydocks who was responsible of its upkeep. In 2021, the clock tower was restored. In collaboration with Kottonera Foundation.
Il-bini tal-Forti San Mikiel fl-Isla beda fit-8 ta’ Mejju 1552 fi żmien il-Gran Mastru Juan d’Homedes. Il-forti kien iddisinjat mill-perit Pedro Pardo d’Andrera u tlesta fl-1553. Il-kostruzzjoni tal-belt tal-Isla bdiet matul l-għaxar snin ta’ wara. Il-belt tal-Isla nbniet fuq pjan ta’ grid u l-istess kunċett intuża wkoll fil-bini tal-belt kapitali l-ġdida tal-Belt Valletta. Sfortunatament, din il-parti tal-Isla twaqqgħet fl-aħħar tas-seklu 19 mill-awtoritajiet Ingliżi sabiex testendi ż-żona tat-tarzna. L-arloġġ tal-Isla nbena mill-Ingliżi fl-1908. L-arloġġ għandu erba' uċuħ u jħares lejn it-tliet ibliet. Il-makkinarju tiegħu ġie mmanifatturat fl-1905 minn John Smith & Sons, Midland Clock Works, Derby. Matul it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija ż-żona ġiet ibbumbardjata ħafna iżda fortunatament l-arloġġ qatt ma ntlaqat u qatt ma waqaf jaħdem. Aktar tard, l-arloġġ tal-Isla ġie mgħoddi lill-Malta Drydocks li kienet responsabbli mill-manutenzjoni tiegħu. Fl-2021 l-arloġġ tal-Isla ġie rrestawrat. B’kollaborazzjoni mal-Fondazzjoni Kottonera.
