Gardjola Gardens
Gardjola Gardens
Location: Isla
The Gardjola Gardens were constructed on a grid pattern by order of Grand Master Claude De La Sengle. The Gardjola sits on the bastion and has panoramic views over the entrance of the Grand Harbour, Fort St. Angelo, the docks in Marsa and Valletta. It has a guard tower (the Gardjola) which purpose was to guard the harbour. The guard tower has several symbols sculped on it such as an eye, an ear, and a crane bird symbolizing guardianship and observance protecting the Maltese shores. The tower is a small hexagonal turret with rectangular windows on each side and a dome-roof. It used to serve as a sentry box for sentries. The sentries could open fire through their loopholes without exposing themselves to the enemy. There is a Latin inscription that reassures the residents of the harbour area to be at ease because the tower guards against any enemy attack. Today the Gardjola Gardens is a public park containing palm trees, a fountain and various monument and it provides a relaxing place where one can enjoy the breathtaking view of the harbour. In collaboration with Kottonera Foundation.
Il-Ġonna tal-Gardjola nbnew fuq disinn ta’ gradilja fuq ordni tal-Gran Mastru Claude De La Sengle. Il-Gardjola qegħda fuq is-swar u għandha veduti panoramiċi fuq id-daħla tal-Port il-Kbir, il-Forti Sant Anġlu, il-baċiri fil-Marsa u l-Belt Valletta. Għandha torri ta' gwardja (il-Gardjola) liema skop kien li jħares il-port. It-torri ta’ gwardja għandu diversi simboli skulpjati fuqu bħal għajn, widna, u għasfur li jissimbolizzaw t-tutela u l-osservanza li jipproteġu x-xtut Maltin. It-torri huwa turretta eżagonali żgħira bi twieqi rettangolari fuq kull naħa u saqaf ta’ koppla. It-torri kien iservi bħala kaxxa tal-għassa għas-sentinelli. Is-sentinelli jistgħu jiftħu n-nar permezz tal-lakuni tagħhom mingħajr ma jesponu ruħhom għall-għadu. Wieħed isib ukoll skrizzjoni bil-latin fejn isserraħ moħħ ir-residenti taż-żona tal-port li huma siguri hekk kif it-torri jħares kontra kull attakk mil-għadu. Illum il-Ġonna tal-Gardjola huma park pubbliku li fih siġar tal-palm, funtana u monumenti u jipprovdi post rilassanti fejn wieħed jista' jgawdi veduta mill-isbaħ tal-port.B’kollaborazzjoni mal-Fondazzjoni Kottonera.
