George Mitrovich Square

Location: Isla

The George Mitrovich Square situated in the entrance of Senglea is named after the Maltese patriot and politician from Isla, George Mitrovich. In the early years of the British rule in Malta there was no freedom of press and the Maltese were not allowed to be involved in any of the country’s finances or administration. For this reason, Mitrovich fought for the entrance of freedom of speech in Malta and for the right for Maltese people to be able to express themselves. He founded the Comitato Generale Maltese, a committee which was composed of elected deputies representing Maltese from different professions, the clergy, and the nobility. In 1832, he and four other members of the committee started a petition that demanded administrative reforms. The petition requested the establishment of a Consiglio Popolare that would be composed of around 30 people to be elected bythe Maltese upper class. This petition brought on a new constitution in 1835. In his later years Mitrovich who had a family of 12 lived in poverty. He died in his house in Valletta on 13 March 1885.George Mitrovich is regarded as a patriot who fought to improve the lives of the Maltese people as he paved the way for future reforms. In collaboration with Kottonera Foundation.

Il-Pjazza George Mitrovich li tinsab fid-daħla tal-Isla hija msemmija għall-patrijott u politiku Malti mill-Isla, George Mitrovich. Fis-snin bikrin tal-ħakma Ingliża f’Malta ma kien hemm l-ebda libertà tal-istampa u l-Maltin ma kienux jitħallew ikunu involuti fil-finanzi jew fl-amministrazzjoni tal-pajjiż. Għal din ir-raġuni, Mitrovich iġġieled għad-dħul tal-libertà tal-kelma f'Malta u għad-dritt għall-Maltin li jkunu jistgħu jesprimu ruħhom. Huwa waqqaf il-Comitato Generale Maltese, kumitat li kien magħmul minn deputati eletti li jirrappreżentaw Maltin minn professjonijiet differenti, il-kleru u n-nobbli. Fl-1832, hu u erba' membri oħra tal-kumitat bdew petizzjoni li talbet riformi amministrattivi. Il-petizzjoni talbet it-twaqqif tal-Consiglio Popolare li kien ikun magħmul minn madwar 30 persuna li jiġu eletti mill-klassi għolja maltija. Din il-petizzjoni ġabet kostituzzjoni ġdida fl-1835. Fl-aħħar snin ta’ ħajtu Mitrovich li kellu familja ta' 12 għex fil-faqar. Huwa miet fid-dar tiegħu fil-Belt Valletta fit-13 ta' Marzu 1885. George Mitrovich huwa meqjus bħala patrijott li ġġieled biex itejjeb il-ħajja tal-poplu Malti waqt li witta t-triq għal riformi futuri. B’kollaborazzjoni mal-Fondazzjoni Kottonera.
