St. Barbara Capuchin Friary Church
St. Barbara Capuchin Friary Church
Triq Santa Liberata, Il-Kalkara,
After having a dream, Giuseppe Valerio Abela donated a plot of land in Kalkara to the Capuchin Friars so that they could build a church and a convent. On 18th June 1736, the friars started constructing the church and the convent. The first stone that was laid was blessed by Archbishop Mons. Paul Alphérande Bussan. The Capuchin friar Fra Giuseppe was responsible of the design of the buildings whilst the work was financed thanks to the donations of the people including donations from Grand Master Antonio Manuel de Vilhena. On 2nd August 1743, the inauguration and blessing of the church and the convent took place. The church is dedicated to Saint Barbara and was consecrated on 18th June 1747. The church contains several artifacts such as the perspective of the high altar which is the work of Francesco Carapecchin done in 1743 and the painting of Santa Barbara commissioned by Agostino Masucci in 1739. On 17th September 1752 the holy relics of the martyr Santa Liberata were brought from Rome. In the church one also finds a special devotion towards Saint Jude Thaddeus.
Wara li kellu ħolma, Giuseppe Valerio Abela ta donazzjoni art fil-Kalkara lill-Patrijiet Kapuċċini sabiex ikunu jistgħu jibnu knisja u kunvent. Fit-18 ta' Ġunju 1736, il-patrijiet bdew jibnu l-knisja u l-kunvent. L-ewwel ġebla li tpoġġiet ġiet imbierka mill-Arċisqof Mons. Paul Alphérande Bussan. Il-patri Kapuċċin Fra Giuseppe kien responsabbli mid-disinn tal-bini filwaqt li x-xogħol ġie ffinanzjat grazzi għad-donazzjonijiet tan-nies inklużi donazzjonijiet mill-Gran Mastru Antonio Manuel de Vilhena. Fit-2 ta' Awwissu 1743, saret l-inawgurazzjoni u t-tberik tal-knisja u l-kunvent. Il-knisja hija ddedikata lil Santa Barbara u ġiet ikkonsagrata fit-18 ta’ Ġunju 1747. Il-knisja fiha diversi artifatti bħall-perspettiva tal-artal maġġuri li hija x-xogħol ta’ Francesco Carapecchin magħmul fl-1743 u l-pittura ta’ Santa Barbara kkummissjonata minn Agostino Masucci fl-1739. Fis-17 ta' Settembru 1752 inġiebu minn Ruma r-relikwi qaddisa tal-martri Santa Liberata. Fil-knisja wieħed isib ukoll devozzjoni speċjali lejn San Ġuda Tadeu.
